10 Sisterlocks Experiences I Encountered in 2012

It has been 1-year 7months since my Sisterlocks installation. As you can imagine, a lot can happen within a year; let alone a year and 7 months.  So I decided to sum it up with some helpful experiences that I encountered so far.

10 – All Sisterlocks consultants are not created equal. Over time, I ran into a few scheduling conflicts with the consultant who did my install. For convenience I contemplated taking the re-tightening class but my schedule did not permit it. I ended up going to a different consultant when my re-tightening was well overdue and I couldn’t get on my consultant’s schedule. I was very surprised to learn that my parts were not A-line straight. I had no idea what that meant but the new consultant explained it to me. She took the time out to educate me on some things I wish I had known prior to settling with a consultant. I learned that research is important; and so are parts! What I would do differently? Trust, but verify! So far I have had a wonderful experience with my new consultant…Naturally, of Course.

9 – Sleeping in rollers does not have to be painful. My hair is a fun length and I get to play with various styles. I dreaded the idea of rodding my hair or sleeping in hard rollers. I found these soft rollers and they worked wonderfully! It took me about 20 minutes to roll my hair (dry). I slept in them overnight and removed them in the morning. Loved it! My curls lasted for quite a few days.

8 – Color is fun but be careful. Over the summer I wanted to lighten my hair color. After I got the OK from my consultant (the new one) I put a permanent hair color in my hair. I loved the results but due to the different texture of my hair, I had to leave it in for a long time. I also had to wash, and wash, and wash…did I say wash? All of that washing caused my entire head to get tangled (for lack of a better word). I think my retightening appointment must have taken an extra 2 hours. I could be exaggerating but it certainly felt that way. I won’t be touching up the roots for another 6 months.

7- NBFs are better than BFFs. Organix Coconut Milk Shampoo is my new best friend (NBF) – OK so everyone has a best friend forever (BFF) but who has a NBF? Oooh I know…Me!!! I get so excited when I use this product. My new consultant turned me onto this and I have been using it sense. Please don’t tell the Sisterlocks products police J My locks are so soft after using this product. I love my NBF.

6 – Bantu Knots are cute. I must admit, It took me a while to come around to the idea of wearing bantu knots. I’m no Jada Pinkett Smith and I thought that only she could rock them the way that she did . I’m still not over my bantu knot shyness; meaning I won’t wear them outside without a headwrap on…but I do rock them around the house. What makes then noteworthy of mentioning here? Bantu Knot Outs…OK? Yes! This has been my number one favorite style to do on my locks at all lengths. Love them!

5 – Sisterlocks are sturdy but still need tender care. I got so comfortable with my Sisterlocks caring for themselves; I forgot that they needed some tender loving care. Since my locks are mature, I am no longer banding. I over did it one month and massaged the heck out of my scalp. Well I paid for it during my re-tightening that month because my locks decided to get the tender loving care from each other. Yes, you guessed it; they started to grow into each other. I’m not sure if that’s what is referred to as slippage but whatever it was I don’t want to do it again. I will be very gentle with massaging my scalp during my shampoos from now on.

4 – Light oil on the scalp is OK. I am the first to admit that I was somewhat of a product junkie and went into major withdrawal when I got my Sisterlocks. However, this winter I seemed to suffer from the worse case of dry scalp. I am a water drinker and that did not solve my problem. I decided to lightly oil my scalp with some Almond Glow oil and my scalp looks really healthy again. So far, this light oiling has not affected my locks in a negative way.

3 – Hydration and nutrition are important. They say you are what you eat. Well this old adage also applies to our hair. Even with Sisterlocks, having a balanced diet and staying hydrated is important for healthy hair. It is important to eat protein-rich foods, as well as those containing vitamin A, B, C, E and K because they are good for your hair. I also look for foods that are high in silica, such as potatoes (including the skin), asparagus, cucumbers and bell peppers; silica is a mineral that is essential for strong, healthy, shiny hair. Finally, staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water helps give hair a natural shine.

2 – ACV Rinse is a great cleaning solution…for hair! Even though I don't use a lot of products in my hair, sometimes I feel the need to give it a deep cleaning. I accomplish this by doing an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinse. After doing this, I find my hair is looking refreshed and bouncy again. There are many recipes online but the  recipe and instructions that I follow are on an Eternally Summer blog.

1 – Being liberated feels great! If I could turn back the hands of time I would do it all over again! I have never felt more confident and free. My locks are not only simple to maintain but they are very stylish. The offer versatility and look great dressed up or dressed down. I went from being a conservative professional to a genuine reflection of African American Beauty. I love natural hair and I love my Sisterlocks.

Happy New Year – Looking forward to experiencing 2013!

One Week in Sisterlocks - How it Feels

It's been at least a week since I had my Sisterlocks installation appointment. I love my hair and I feel great about my decision to grow it with Sisterlocks. As each day passes by I feel more and more comfortable with my new look. Here are a few pictures after one week taken on June 8th:
